Sailing through woods towards a calm walled garden: KEP Swillington Organic Farm Visit – 2nd October 2009: Introduction: Eight Members and associates of KEP visited Swillington Organic Farm near Leeds on a very windy but fine afternoon. A vaguely ramshackle entrance hid an astonishing community enterprise of great scope and depth. By the time we left, laden with organic meat and vegetable produce bought from the farm shop, we were in awe of their achievements over five years and grateful that we’d made the connection for the sake of our own ideas and emerging plans in Kirklees. Kirstin Glendinning was our host, at first a slight and unassuming young person who quickly impressed with her knowledge and experience of, and commitment to, the farm and its aims. After studying Chinese at University, she ‘could not bear to work indoors’ and instead ‘took this farm job’ and had been there ever since. Now she’s the region’s Soil Association’s Regional Development Coordinator - we were most fortunate to have her as our guide for the day. Swillington Farm is 160 acres incorporating a large network of well-stocked fishing lakes (£6 a day – no barbed hooks allowed) adjoining the 71 mile long River Aire – part of which is canalised as the Aire & Calder Canal. The land had clearly benefited from the presence of the river as we were later to learn. A 25lb catch – the record stands at 115lb! |

Transition Network News currently features an interesting article on local food strategies. "Our love affair with food is so beautifully captured in Tamzin Pinkerton’s recently launched Local Food handbook: what an amazingly inspiring celebration of the collective genius and passion we hold around food. What’s more, what a fantastic testament to our collaborative power and determination to transform our food system to nourish our bodies, minds and souls."
